France Joins List of Countries to Ban BPA

The French Senate have now passed a law which will ban BPA from food packaging. This law banning BPA from children’s food containers started this past January 1st, 2013 and will extend to all containers by 2015. This is an excellent step by the French government to protect citizens and especially children from a potentially toxic chemical. BPA has been linked to a myriad of health problems and has already been banned in baby products in the United States.

The French Government banned BPA from baby bottles in 2010 and the continued debate over the health impact of BPA has resulted in more precautionary action. While medical professionals applaud the ban as a step to make children safer, the plastic industry has predictably not been as positive. PlasticsEurope has questioned the decision by the French Government and worries about the need to find new plastics for containers. It is clear that the impact of BPA cannot be ignored and we need to find alternative solutions that do not pose a health risk.

The ban of BPA in children’s containers comes into effect at the beginning of 2013 with the full ban on the chemical coming in 2015. As BPA continues to be linked to health problems, we can only hope that more action will be taken here in the United States.
